Students clash at Bahauddin Zakariya University

Advance fee issue troubles MAO College students Lahore, May 28: A large number of students of the Government MAO College are in a fix as the administration has withheld their roll number slips for upcoming MA Part-I exam, pressurising them to first submit dues for yet-to-start Part-II classes.

The students condemning the decision have demanded the authorities of Higher Education Department, Punjab, intervene and provide relief to them. The students said there was no logic in collecting dues of the classes which were yet to commence, adding that the issue was badly affecting their preparations for the exams scheduled to commence from June 9, 2011.

According to the students enrolled in different evening postgraduate programmes, their families were in great trouble as submitting fees in advance in prevailing worst financial situation was not possible for most of them.

One of the students, seeking anonymity, also said MAO College administration led by its principal was forcing the students to submit dues in advance as the college did not have funds to pay to the faculty members and junior staff serving the college on contract basis. "Otherwise one cannot comprehend as to why the students are being victimised", he added.

Another student said submitting over Rs 22,000 at once just to get roll number slip was injustice. He also questioned, "What if a student fails the Part-I examination." "In this case what will be legal status of the amount collected by the college in advance," he questioned.

He said the roll number slip issue had greatly irked the students and they could not focus their studies as well. When contacted, Govt MAO College Principal Syed Irfan Hussain Zaidi said the students had signed an agreement of two years Master's programme and were bound to pay for the same. He said the college had to pay visiting faculty members as well as regular teachers who taught the evening shift students. "We have to pay teachers from students fee and therefore are helpless," he added. He said that such issues also created problems in audit process, claiming if the fee was not collected from the students, the head of the institution had to pay the same to clear the audit objection.

The principal said all the students had submitted the dues except some students enrolled in the Mass Communication Department.

The college students also staged a protest demonstration against the college administration on the issue.

Students reject 200pc raise in MA/MSc exams by IUB
Bahawalpur: Students have rejected up to 200 per cent increase in the fee for the MA/MSc first annual examination 2011.

The university has increased its fee from Rs 2,000 to Rs 8,000 for local candidates, while from Rs 4,000 to Rs 15,000 for the mofussil candidates. Students and parents said that the increase in the examination fee would undermine the efforts of the government to promote higher education in the country. They said that the Islamia University Bahawalpur was the only public sector university in the region and is funded by the government. They said that if the university was facing shortage of funds it should reduce the luxuries of officials and terminate the surplus staff, which was recruited to oblige various groups and politicians.

When contacted, IUB Controller Examination Riasat Ali Qureshi, who is working on contract after his retirement, defended the decision and said that the recent increase in the examination fee had been made to meet the expenditures of the Examination Branch. He said that IUB VC Prof Dr Muhammad Mukhtiar had approved the increase in the examination fee. The news

Students clash at BZU leaves 10 injured
Multan: At least 10 students of Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU) got seriously injured when a group of their opponents, who were identified as activists of People's Students Federation (PSF), student wing of ruling PPP, suddenly attacked them at the main gate of the varsity on Thursday evening.

The injured were rushed to Nishtar Hospital by Rescue 1122 officials where the condition of two students is stated to be precarious. Over three dozen assailants, who were armed with clubs, iron rods and other tools, encircled the workers of Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) just outside police post and badly thrashed them. Although the IJT workers kept screaming for help, the cops stood silent, staring at the battlefield. Traffic remained suspended on Bosan Road for about one hour because of the clash while the main gate of BZU presented the view of a war torn area. The injured students were identified as Waqas Ijaz, Ghulam Abbas, Zubair, Babar Khan, Waqas Solangi, Ahmad Ali, Ali Ahmad, Saboor Ali, Sana Ullah Aulakh and Faisal Ayyaz. It may be mentioned here that many teachers, students and university staffers have become victims of highhandedness of PSF workers during the last one month but no action is taken against them. "They are (PSF workers) being backed by politicians. Whenever they commit any crime, two MPAs from Multan pressurize police not to take any action," said an administrative officer of BZU on condition of anonymity. "We are helpless. They broke the hand of a conductor of university bus when he asked them not to enter from female gate. When the aggrieved party approached police, they refused to register FIR. What can we do in this situation?" he posed a question.
