The Minister for Youth, Peter Garrett, welcomed Secretary General of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement, Luc Panissod to Australia during a meeting at Parliament House in Canberra today.
Mr Garrett and Mr Panissod discussed issues including the growth in demand for scouting around the world, and the important role the movement plays in leadership development.
“I congratulate the Scout Movement, and Scouts Australia, for the contribution it has made to the development of our young people, and through them our nation’s progress,” Mr Garrett said.
“As a former Scout, I know first-hand what a great job the organisation has done here in Australia and around the world in providing young people with important life skills, as well as providing fun, low-cost outdoor activities.”
Scouting is the largest youth organisation in the world, with over 30 million members across 161 nations. It is also the largest youth organisation in Australia, with some 70,000 members. The Labor Government has provided support to Scouts Australia for programs that develop and support young people.
Mr Garrett said that participating in the scouting movement helps young people improve their personal confidence, self esteem and resilience, as well as giving them the chance to experience adventure and test their skills in different situations.
“The goals of the Scouting movement support the government’s vision for young people - that they grow up safe and resilient, and have the opportunities and skills they need to work, engage in community life and influence the decisions that affect them,” he said.
The Gillard Government is investing in Australia’s young people through building the future workforce, helping with the cost of living, increasing sustainability and planning for better schools, hospitals and health care.
“We want to ensure that everyone, including all young people, benefit from the opportunities that flow from a stronger economy and are well placed for the future,” Mr Garrett said.
“I would also like to extend my appreciation to the thousands of volunteers who support Scouting throughout Australia, as leaders or supporters. These volunteers give great energy and dedication to the development to our local communities.”
