The magic lantern: Lahore’s miniature cinema of afterlife MUSHARRAF ALI FAROOQI
The anonymous master who had introduced the new genre in Indian miniature art was never heard from again.
The winter skies had grown darker than usual and the chill in the air more unbearable when Muhammad Bakhsh finished saying his maghrib prayers at the Wazir Khan mosque, and headed for his spot near the bathhouse with a white sheet and the carefully wrapped collection of miniatures tucked under his arm. He hung the sheet from the faience tile-work wall, and began stringing up the

Past present: Battling demons church dominated every aspect of life in Europe MUBARAK ALI
During the medieval period, the church dominated every aspect of life in Europe. The Pope was the spiritual and temporal leader whose authority could not be challenged. The rulers were subordinate to him and excommunicated for defying him.
If a Christian deviated from the teachings of the church, he would be declared a heretic and — in the extreme — burnt alive at the stake. The Inquisition traced heretics and made certain that the teachings of the church would remain unchallenged. It

Pashto cinema: Phoenix rising? demolition of cinema houses and proliferation SHER ALAM SHINWARI
While serious efforts are being made to revive Pashto cinema, the law and order situation, demolition of cinema houses and proliferation of pirated DVDs are just a few of the many hurdles in the way of the promotion of cine culture in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
More than a dozen cine-theatres in Peshawar have been turned into shopping plazas, and out of the remaining nine, three are soon to be demolished. Under these circumstances, a bleak future awaits Pashto cinema. However, some

Childhood diabetes: Life can still be sweet 14-year-old Ali doesn’t quite walk straight N. NAWAZ
It is quite hard to ignore that 14-year-old Ali doesn’t quite walk straight. As he exits the local supermarket and heads to his car, he sways left and right rhythmically. After managing to walk another 40 metres, he reaches his car and slumps immediately in the passenger seat. Face flushed and panting, he turns around and asks his mother if he can drink the chilled can of soda they had just bought.
“Mama please, just once Mama let me drink it,” he pleads even though he had promised

Earthly matters: Burning down our house (mainly carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide) RINA SAEED KHAN
Scientists from around the world are today telling us that we need to cut the emissions of greenhouse gases (mainly carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide) urgently and immediately if we are to avert a global warming of more than two degrees Celsius which would be catastrophic for life on the planet. The earth had the capacity to absorb these emissions (mostly from fuel emissions and land use changes in the last 50 years) but now we emit far beyond what the earth can clean — our oceans
Gardening: Herbs in the garden Question and answers ZAHRAH NASIR
Q: I want to grow Passiflora in my Karachi garden. Please tell me what situation and soil does it prefer, where to obtain it and when is the best time to plant it.
A: Passion flowers enjoy having their roots in partial shade and their ‘heads’ in the sun. They thrive in humus rich, well-drained soil and need something to climb up and over. A trellis fixed against a wall is ideal although they will also merrily ramble up, over and through any convenient trees and large shrubs that happen

modernist artists of Pakistan Artichive: Seated Nude in Blue FROM INPAPERMAGZINE
Shakir Ali was one of the most influential modernist artists of Pakistan. In this painting, ‘Seated Nude in Blue’ 1970, oil-on-canvas 35 x 54 inches, like many of his others there is a dark figure, which is said to be a reference to figures like the Hindu goddess Kali. He made many such seated figures of the women in blue and black against stark and fiery red backgrounds. In this painting, we also see the influence of Edgar Degas, and his interest in Western primivitism.
