Shakir Ali was one of the most influential modernist artists of Pakistan. In this painting, ‘Seated Nude in Blue’ 1970, oil-on-canvas 35 x 54 inches, like many of his others there is a dark figure, which is said to be a reference to figures like the Hindu goddess Kali. He made many such seated figures of the women in blue and black against stark and fiery red backgrounds. In this painting, we also see the influence of Edgar Degas, and his interest in Western primivitism.
