Oxford and Cambridge have been named among the strongest universities in the world in the latest world rankings for arts and humanities, featuring in the top five for all disciplines.

The rankings which show Oxford coming in top for geography and Cambridge ranking highest in linguistics, show the best performers in the six disciplines; philosophy, modern languages, linguistics, geography, history and english language and literature. The Oxbridge universities are in the top five for each subject.

Although the University of Edinburgh ranks seventh place for linguistics, the rankings published by leading higher education and careers research company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) state that apart from Oxford and Cambridge, no other UK university makes the top 20 for english language and literature.

American universities make a strong appearance once again in the QS rankings - Harvard topped the list for biological sciences rankings published earlier this year. The elite university ranked first for philosophy, history, modern languages english language and literature in the latest release.

With the focus on UK universities charging higher tuition fees in 2012-13 , John O'Leary, Editor of the Times Good University Guide and a member of the QS Academic Advisory Board has said "With the cuts and fee increases, arts and humanities departments will be relying more heavily on students for their funding" adding that "This makes it all the more important that UK universities are viewed as internationally competitive. And with international fees already approaching those of the leading US institutions, this will also be key to their ability to continue to attract top international students."

We have compiled these rankings and all the QS rankings so far into a spreadsheet which can be downloaded below. The rankings feature scores, university rankings and country and show the full 100 listed. Below is a table showing the top 10 in all six arts and humanities disciplines by subject.
