Art of any form would attract me right from a very young age. Yet, it wasn't until much later, that I realised I could pursue a fullfledged career in performing arts. I joined the Nalanda Dance Research Centre for a Bachelor in performing arts (BPA), after completing class XII. Unlike my classmates who had been learning dance for some years, I was, however, a complete novice. With the help of my 'gurus' and teachers, and my dedication, I have grown to love my chosen path. I graduated in 2010 with a distinction and am now pursuing the two-year Master's in performing arts (MPA) at the same institute.
The subjects taught are varied and interesting, but what I love best is mythology. Mythological stories and 'puranas' fascinate me. I remember my first 'shloka' class, where we had to learn Sanskrit 'shlokas' and I couldn't pronounce a single word. Today, I am well versed with the entire book.
The MPA programme also includes theory like Western ballet, movement studies, contemporary dance styles and practical studies like choreography, solo performance , 'nattuvangam' and more. In the final year, we will have the option to choose between conducting a research or 'varnam' choreography. Performances are the most important part of the curriculum. Today, I am part of the Nalanda productions like Santavani and Buddha and I also had the chance to present solo performances.
Besides academics, I teach children who come to the institute. It is a heartening experience to be able to learn as a student and to teach what you love. Nalanda has not only helped me grow as an artist but also as a human being.
On taking this course, people expressed doubts about the future of such a career, and I had little to answer. Today, I can confidently say I made the right choice. Besides jobs offered by schools, people outside India are fascinated by the Indian culture. A career like this not only gives one the opportunity to earn, but also to take the rich Indian culture abroad.
