Several years ago, the Kultur Palast Hamburg — a cultural centre in Hamburg, Germany, and provider of the HipHop Academy — hosted an event called 'open stage' where young people could perform as they pleased. The event revealed that German youngsters were heavily into hiphop culture . So it seemed only logical to provide the youth with an avenue , dedicated exclusively to hiphop culture, recalls Axel Zielke, artistic director, HipHop Academy, Hamburg.

In fact, it was this 'open stage' performance that inspired Dörte Inselmann, managing director of the Kultur Palast Hamburg , to establish the Academy in 2007. According to Zielke, the Academy adheres to three important ideas — first, it incorporates all elements of hiphop culture; secondly, it is designed to support and educate students on a long-term basis; thirdly, the hiphop culture is embodied in its true essence.

COURSES ON OFFER

The Academy, with a student-strength of 520, offers 79 courses in 40 different locations. "We offer courses and workshops in all elements of hiphop culture, starting from rap, breakdance, newstyle , graffiti, djing, beat/music production and human beatbox ," adds Zielke.

Training is offered at three levels — beginners, advanced students and Masterclasses for those with a professional perspective . As far as faculty members are concerned, the Academy has trainers who are recognised artists within the German hiphop scene. "Also, we organise workshops with international artists and some of the world's best hiphop dancers."
