PUNE: Former chairman of the University Grants Commission, Sukhadeo Thorat and former Supreme Court judge V S Sirpurkar will be among the eminent speakers at a two-day national seminar on 'Lokpal and eradication of corruption', being hosted by the University of Pune (UoP) from September 22.

The event, jointly organised by the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Chair and Ambedkar Studies Centre, is being held against the backdrop of anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare's recent indefinite fast in support of the Jan Lokpal Bill. The movement drew strong nationwide support, apart from bringing the issue of corruption into sharp focus.

Speaking to TOI on Tuesday, Ambedkar Chair professor and noted thinker Raosaheb Kasabe said, "We have been taking up issues that are relevant to the prevailing system in the country, for discussion and debate at regular intervals."

Kasabe said, "The objective behind the seminar is to bring about a comprehensive assessment of various issues relating to the Lokpal, which refers to an independent ombudsman empowered to register and investigate complaints of corruption." The proposed Lokpal bill is expected to serve as a deterrant anti-corruption law.

According to Kasabe, Hazare's fast may have brought the issue of corruption in to the public consciousness but the movement did not address all the issues relating to the Lokpal bill. "The print and the electronic media too has been unable to aptly present the views and counter-views relating to the movement," he said.

The seminar will aim at providing a platform to those sections of people, who have divergent views about the Lokpal movement and seek to find a solution, he said. "We have invited Anna's close aide, Vishwambhar Chowdhari, to speak for the Jan Lokpal movement," he said.

Issues like Lokpal and SC/ST, OBCs and Muslims; corruption and its genesis; Lokpal and the media; Lokpal and the Indian Constitution and Future of Lokpal and eradication of corruption will be taken up in various sessions during the two-day deliberations.

Thorat will inaugurate the event at 10.30 am at the varsity's Namdeo hall, while acting vice-chancellor Sanjay Chahande will chair the session. Director of UoP's board of college and university development W N Gade will be the chief guest.

Ambedkar Studies' Centre director Vijay Khare; veteran socialist Bhai Vaidya; Jawaharlal Nehru University teacher Vivek Kumar; former dean of UoP's law faculty Sureshchandra Bhosale and social activist Kumar Saptarshi will be the key speakers.
