RAWALPINDI, Aug 25: Politicians and bureaucrats here on Wednesday spent a hectic day pondering over ways and strategies to take the city to the top position in quality education which is currently on the fifth rung in the province.
Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has given the officials 100 days for making Rawalpindi a model district in education sector and asked the local PML-N lawmakers to assist the education department in bringing reforms to the educational institutions.
In a bid to materialise the dream and task of the chief minister, the PML-N lawmakers held a meeting with the education department officers that was chaired by DCO Saqib Zafar.
But before the meeting could float suggestions about quality education, it was informed that 50 per cent schools in the district lacked basic amenities like furniture, water, labs, computers and classrooms.
The lawmakers were requested by the DCO to set aside some funds from the development packages allocated to them by the provincial government to improve the conditions of schools before brining improvement to the quality of education.
The PML-N parliamentarians suggested reviving the school councils in order to make awareness among the students and prepare them for future challenges besides helping them participate in quiz and extracurricular activities.
It was agreed that furniture should be provided to schools in the presence of MNAs and MPAs to ensure provision of the commodities to each school as envisioned in the Chief Minister’s Schools Reforms Programme.Dawn.
