Artists exhibit various styles of calligraphy

Rawalpindi:With reverence to the Holy month of Ramazan, a group exhibition on calligraphy was held here on Thursday at the Rawalpindi Arts Council (RAC).

The exhibition was held at the newly constructed gallery of the council adjacent to main building of the council. Commissioner Rawalpindi Zahid Saeed was the chief guest on the occasion.

The exhibition displayed more than 55 pieces of art works of various renowned and upcoming calligraphists.

The participating calligraphists includes Pride of Performance Aftab Ahmed Khan, Ellahi Bux Matteh, Imran Tahir, Azeem Iqbal, Mohammad Anwar Sadidi, Abdul Rehman Tabani, Mehtab Ahmed, Rehmat Ali, Mahmood Ali, Isra Ambreen, Bushra Nusrat, Qurat-ul-Ain Azmam, Saba Irum and Younus Roomi.

While talking to The News , Ellahi Bux Matteh said that among many calligraphists his composition is very famous. He has learnt calligraphy from Syed Nafees Shah, who was also a renowned calligraphist. He mostly works in Tulth and Nasq styles that are very popular among the varied styles of calligraphy. He has exhibited his work in England, Iran, Saudi Arabia and many other countries. He has been teaching calligraphy at the National Art Gallery and Hunerkada and his students are following his footsteps. Advising upcoming calligraphists, he said that the students should keep the work of their teachers in front, learn the techniques, compositions etc and then start working.

While talking to this scribe, another renowned calligraphist, Azeem Iqbal said that he has worked with many mediums including leather, wood, bamboo, paper, copper, gold paper etc. He said that he has also worked in 3D collage work that is done by very few artists. He has chosen the era of Holy Prophet Hazrat Mohammad (peace be upon him) for his paintings and his paintings reflected the same era. He has worked extensively on Elastration that is the decorative motifs in calligraphy.

Commissioner Rawalpindi Zahid Saeed while speaking on the occasion said, We have done the soft inauguration of the newly constructed art gallery of the arts council well bring in more activities here so that the people of Rawalpindi can see works of various artists. Our artists have always rendered their services for the survival and the advancement of art with such passion that they should be highly encouraged. It s always a pleasure visiting Rawalpindi Arts Council where renowned artists as well as young artist display their innovative and creative work. Each piece speaks volumes about its creator and their passion is visible from their work.

The commissioner hoped that calligraphy is taken seriously by the upcoming artists, as it is a tradition and generations have passed doing extensive work on calligraphy. I hope its not a dying art because it is very close to our heart because it displays the versus of Holy Qur aan and the names of Allah Almighty and Holy Prophet Hazrat Mohammad (peace be upon him). The young generation should deliberately take interest in this form of art, he said.

The commissioner congratulated the RAC Incharge Waqar Ahmed and all his staff on the inauguration of new gallery.

Bushra Nusrat, Qurat-ul-ain Azmam and Saba Irum students of FJWU working under Ms Sumera also displayed their Koofi composition of calligraphy on paper. The calligraphic exhibition will continue at the RAC till August 22nd.The news.
