City marks Independence Day with zeal

LAHORE: The city celebrated the Independence Day with zeal and passion as youngsters were seen roaming around the city with their faces painted in green and holding the Pakistani flags.

There were impressive speeches and statements by the different seat holders, seminars, lectures and events in educational institutions on the 64th Independence Day of Pakistan but the true spirit of independence was seen in the celebration of children, who bought stickers, badges and buntings from their pocket money.

Walking around proudly carrying the flags and wearing badges on their clothes, children were also seen wheeling on their bicycles on Jail Road and Main Boulevard, Gulberg. Their nicely decorated cycles showed their passion and eagerness towards the Independence Day.

With his face painted in green and a T-shirt with the Pakistani flag, 12-year-old Salamat was seen chanting slogans for Pakistan. Passing commuters stopped at Liberty Chowk to see the excited child who smiled and waved at the curious onlookers. “I want to be a rich and successful man and if there is no country, I won’t be able to make my dream a reality. I know the circumstances are not favourable but they will be better when I am pursuing my career,” he told Daily Times.

Television and radio stations broadcasted special programmes regarding the Independence Day and showed special video clips from 1947 when the country came into being. The messages by Quaid-e-Azam for the nation were also shown whose importance was highlighted by celebrities. Alhamra Arts Council arranged special programmes for children. The public parks and city zoo were packed as families toured the provincial capital, enjoying the cloudy weather and Independence Day.

“My children have been awake since 6am today and from that time onwards they have been forcing me to take them out to see the decorated city,” said Shahab Khan on The Mall. “I had to convince them to wait for a few hours before the recreational places had opened. Their excitement reminds me of the time when I was younger and pushed my parents for taking me out on Independence Day,” he said. On the other hand, one wheeling and racing continued from early Sunday morning till late. Using the flag as bandanas, the youngsters raced through the main roads of the city. Others had put huge flags on the rooftops of their cars with loud music.Daily Times.
