Karachi:The newly established Lyari University is gearing up for its final transformation into becoming a fully functioning university by January 12, with the appointment of teaching faculty due after Eid-ul-Fitr and the construction of facilities in full swing.
Education Department officials told The News that the university, previously a college, would offer the courses of Arts and Design, Information Technology, Business Administration and Commerce. The building of the Government Degree Science and Commerce College in Lyari which spread over four acres was moved to another locations and its reconstruction as a university was under way, they said.
The vice chancellor, registrar, director finance and non-teaching staff members had already been appointed but the faculty spots would be filled after Eid. Officials also informed that over 60 people were working in grades 1 to 16.
While the provincial government was bearing all costs of the project, officials informed that there were chances that international donors may assist in the construction of the university.
The design of the new institution has already been laid out and a batch of 60 students will be enrolled for each discipline at the beginning of the project. Half of these seats would be offer to students coming from Lyari, Keamari, Gadap and Malir while the rest would be available among people hailing form other districts in Sindh so as to have a more holistic representation of the province. At least one seat would be offered to a student from each district in every academic discipline.
Presently, the construction of the library, computer lab, classrooms, teachers’ common room and canteen was underway.The news.
