Protest at JPMC over non-payment of salaries

Karachi:A general body meeting of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) employees including doctors, nurses and paramedical staff on Tuesday demanded from the government to restore the federal status of devolved hospitals in Karachi saying due to devolution, both the staff and patients were facing extreme difficulties.
The general body meeting was summoned by the Steering Committee of JPMC employees at JPMC’s Najmuddin Auditorium and it was addressed by the senior professors, doctors and representatives of paramedical staff’s associations.

Speaking on the occasion, the JPMC Steering Committee leaders Prof Shaukat, Prof Liaquat Ali, Prof Iqbal Afridi and Amir Hussain Shah highlighted the problems and difficulties being faced by the staff due to devolution and said that owing to scarcity of funds, not only surgeries but even the provision of medicines to the patients were affected at the federal hospitals.

They said that for the last four months, house officers, Post-Graduate students (PGs) and other staff were not being paid their salaries while their incentives including house rent and emergency allowances were also not being paid.

On the occasion, the JPMC staff carried out a rally inside the hospital premises and chanted slogans for the restoration of the federal status of their hospital.

Meanwhile, House Officers and PGs of the JPMC took out a separate rally inside the JPMC and demanded from the government to pay them salaries, which were stopped for the last four months.

On the occasion, they threatened that if they were not paid their salaries soon, they would be compelled to boycott their duties and it would only result in enhancing sufferings of the patients in the holy month of Ramazan.

The Steering Committee of the JPMC and other two federal hospitals devolved to Sindh government has summoned its next meeting on August 11 to formulate a strategy for future and take concrete steps to ensure job security of JPMC, NICH and NICVD employees.

Its leaders vowed that they would continue their protest and struggle until their demands are met and hospitals continue to function as they were prior to passing of the 18th constitutional amendment.The news.
