SSC II position-holders unsatisfied with curricula

KARACHI: The class-based educational system of Pakistan and various hurdles in increasing the literacy rate have long been discussed in the educational circles and intellectual forums of the country.

Since students are the main stake holders of the entire system, Daily Times engaged some brilliant minds of the metropolis, who scored positions in the recently held Secondary School Certificate Annual Examinations 2011 (Class X) Science Group.

It may be mentioned here that all three positions were scored by the girls of private schools and ironically, no government school has secured any position in the last 13 years.

Hira Shaikh d/o Muhammad Iqbal Shaikh from Usman Public School (Roll No 429659) secured the first position. She obtained 803 marks with a percentage of 94.47. Expressing her feelings, Shaikh said that she was very excited when her name was called for the top position. She said, she has been earning the top position since Nursery and she pays four to five hours to her studies in a day.

Talking about her experience at the examination centre, she expressed satisfaction over the arrangements of BSEK and said cheating was strictly prohibited at their examination centre.

Replying to a question about curricula, she urged that it should be transformed according to the needs of new era .She declared load shedding and terrorism as the core hurdles for local students.

Shaikh entitled her success to her parents and teachers. She said that in securing the achievement her parents and teachers’ support and prayers played the most important role. Her intention of live was to serve the nation as a doctor. Delivering a message to the students she said students should improve their result by putting in hard work.

Ammara d/o Iqbal Ahmed from Progressive Public School (Roll No 437747) earned second position. She obtained 799 marks with a percentage of 94. According to Ammara, parents play the basic role in their children’s education. She also praised her teachers. Ammara also complained of the ongoing law and order situation of the city. She termed the unrest and panic as the enemies of educational system. While criticising the curriculum she said that students are still reading the books which were read by their grand parents.

Talking about her personal feelings and experience she said that she always thought that position could only be achieved just by illegal means but the result proved it wrong. She said that she gives five to six hours to her studies and never joined any coaching centre. She informed that cheating was prohibited in the examination and two to three teachers were always present in the classrooms for vigilance. She also delivered a message to the students to carry on their hard work. “A day will come and you will get the fruit”, she added.

Samar Sajid d/o Sajid Hasan from Shaheen Public School (Roll No 438423) scored third the position . She obtained 796 marks with 93.65 percent. She said that the result was according to her expectation. She always stood 1st in her school life. After completing her homework she would give two hours to her studies. Although she joined coaching, Samar went to the school regularly and won a medal for punctuality. According to her parents play major role in the success of students. She urged the students to focus on their studies while shunning absenteeism.

Samar suggested that new technologies should be introduced in the syllabi. “There is a big difference in the syllabus of Matric and first year and this disparity should be minimised”, she said adding that the biggest problems of Pakistan are inflation and load shedding. These problems could be solved while just sincerity is needed. It may be noted here that all three position-holding students want to become a doctor in future, which points towards a lack of awareness about other professions. Continuous absence of boys from the hall of fame and the fact that public sector schools have failed to get any prominent position is a matter of grave concern for the government as well as for the society. shahid farooq.Daily Times.
