Karachi:The Sindh government has asked the former contractual non-teaching staff of the Education Department, who had to bear the brunt of the Sindh Police’s water cannon during almost every demonstration, to receive their offer letters from the Safia Khan School, New Town, on Sunday.
The former employees have been asked to bring their original computerised national identity cards and (previous) pay slips at 11am. The Education Department would regularise them instead of hiring them on contract.
These employees were hired for three years in 2007 and after the completion of their term, they were sacked by the chief minister in 2010. However, before removing them, the CM Sindh had given them a six-month extension in their contracts with a clause that their jobs would no more be required after the said period.
In reaction, some of the employees went to the court and filed a petition while most of the non-teaching staff decided to launch a protest against the CM’s decision. During their months-long protest, they were detained and also received injuries as police often baton-charged, use tear gas-shelling and water cannon to disperse them. The police also registered First Information Reports against several non-teaching employees.
The employees also staged a token hunger strike at the Karachi Press Club and interior Sindh to highlight their problems. They were later asked by the authorities to appear in a walk-in interview on June 21 to 23, 2010.
After the completion of the process, the provincial government will now distribute offer letters among them. The news.
