Contempt notices issued in schoolteachers case

KARACHI, July 24: The Sindh High Court has put the provincial education secretary and the District Co-ordination Officer (DCO) and the EDO (educa-tion) of Kashmore on notice in a contempt of court application for flouting the SHC order regarding the appointment of primary schoolteachers in the district.

A division bench headed by Chief Justice Mushir Alam also issued a notice to the chief provincial law officer and put off the matter to a date to be later fixed by the court’s office.

On May 19, 2011 the SHC had disposed of the petition of 35 candidates for the post of primary schoolteachers after the EDO, Syed Muhammed Ibrahim Shah, had stated that a fresh merit list would be prepared in view of the government policy of 2008.

He had also stated that there were 315 posts of primary schoolteachers in Kashmore and if anybody, including the petitioners, met the required criterion under the 2008 policy, his or her case would be considered.

The petitioners, represented by Advocate Ali Ahmed Ghumro, filed the contempt of court application against the respondents and submitted that the alleged contemnors had intentionally violated the order of the court that had passed a consent order regarding the preparation of a fresh merit list of the petitioners.

The counsel stated that the respondents had not yet prepared the fresh merit list and they were issuing appointment letters to people of their own choice and to those who had political influence.

The petitioners, he added, applied for the posts and were declared successful. The respondents got the list of successful candidates published in a section of the press on April 29, 2010.

However, they learnt later that the Kashmore DCO had on Jan 20, 2011 issued a new list that did not carry their names.Dawn.
