The Guardian's art critic, Adrian Searle, has been awarded an honorary degree from Nottingham Trent University.

Searle, who has written for the Guardian since 1996, studied at the university in 1972 when it was Trent Polytechnic, but dropped out after one term.

"I was a mess," Searle said in his acceptance speech. "I was alienated. I had spots. I was confused. Some things don't change, and I can't blame modern art for all my problems." He added that the award was particularly gratifying as he had always felt that he'd left the instiutution under a cloud.

As well as writing for the Guardian, Searle has curated exhibitions in the UK, Europe and the USand is visiting professor at the Royal College of Art in London.

"It is enormously gratifying to receive this recognition for my work," he said, "though what is called my work is really just my life. I can't imagine doing anything else."
