Uneducated Britain - how does your constituency compare?

Adults in Glasgow North East have fewer qualifications than any where else in Britain according to new analysis released today.

The University and College Union (UCU) looked at the qualification rates for 632 parliamentary constituencies across the UK and have highlighted some big divisions across regions. Jeevan Vasagar writes:

The union found sharp divides between constituencies – for example, people living in Newcastle upon Tyne Central are twice as likely to be unqualified as their neighbours in Newcastle upon Tyne North.

Of the 20 constituencies with the highest percentage of people with no qualifications, the West Midlands accounts for eight, and has four in the top 10. There is a clear east-west divide in London, the union found: of the 20 worst-performing constituencies in the capital, three-quarters are in the east.

The qualification rates for those aged 16-64 years old, provided by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), were analysed by UCU and show that overall, 11.3% of British adults don't hold any qualifications. The average for England is 11.1% whereas it is slightly higher in Scotland at 12.3% and Wales at 13.3%.

Following closely behind Glasgow North East at 35.3% is Birmingham Hodge Hill at 33.3%. Hodge Hill also has one of the highest claimant counts in the UK.

Brent North is one of the best-performing constituencies with only 1.9% of adults having no qualifications - the lowest in Britain. Romsey and Southampton North also performed well at 2.3%.

Divides in areas and regions can be seen in the data and the map above, drawn by our Graphic artist Finbarr Sheehy. In London, out of the 20 worst-performing constituencies, the majority (three-quarters) are situated in the east.
