Workshop on cytogenetics ends

Karachi:The three-day training workshop on ‘Cytogenetics, Karyotyping & Chromosomal Aberrations’ organized by Dr Abdul Qadeer (AQ) Khan Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (KIBGE), University of Karachi, concluded on Friday.

A team of 25 students and young scientists participated in the workshop from various universities, medical colleges and institutes. The event was held to celebrate the 186th birthday of Gregor Mendel, a German scientist who was known as the father of genetics.

In this regard, a certificate distribution ceremony was held at the University of Karachi (KU). Pro-Vice Chancellor, University of Karachi, Prof. Dr. Shahana Urooj Kazmi, was the chief guest on the occasion.

She said that cytogenetics was offering insights into evolution in this era.

She appreciated the efforts made by the organizers in designing and executing such a critical human-resource enhancement event.

Muhammad Ismail, Director, IBGE-KRL, Islamabad, said that prenatal diagnosis of various congenital disorders was possible by cytogenetics techniques. He further said that if detected at the prenatal stage, it could help the parents to make a conscientious decision on the foetus.

Prof Dr Syed Irtifaq Ali, Director General, KIBGE, emphasized that KIBGE had registered 50 students in MS leading PhD research programmes in the areas of biomedical, industrial and plant biotechnology. He added that these events provide a unique opportunity for interaction between young researchers and experts of biotechnology and genetic engineering.

Dr. Abid Azhar, Co-Director General, KIBGE, said that workshop revolved around the need of implementation of latest and most modern cytogenetic techniques for quick, accurate and cost effective diagnosis of chromosomal disorders such as infertility, Down’s syndrome and Edward’s syndrome.The news.
