PU security measures seemed `uncalled for

AERIAL firing incidents in the past couple of weeks have frightened the Punjab University administration that it felt compelled to sack the chief security officer and gave varsity`s security charge to Vice-Chancellor`s Honorary Adviser Col (retired) Ikramullah.

Col Ikramullah made his presence felt, particularly among journalists, when he `unnecessarily` beefed up security in and around Faisal Auditorium on the New Campus, where BA/BSc annual examination`s six top position holders had been invited to attend the awards-distribution ceremony on Friday.

The security measures seemed `uncalled for`, especially when no VVIP or dignitary was to chair the ceremony. The governor/chancellor as well as the chief minister had already declined to accept the varsity`s invitation. Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran was the chief guest on the occasion.

The PU administration had issued `strict` instructions to journalists to contact the PRO`s office and get their security passes to reach the venue. The vehicular movement had been blocked on all roads leading to the auditorium. While the varsity guards were performing their duties to restrict vehicular movement, some gun-toting guards were seen mounted on rooftops of the IER building adjacent to the auditorium.

Furthermore, cell phone jammers had been installed at the venue that eventually blocked mobile phone operations, perturbing the news channel reporters who had to go out of the auditorium to report the results to their channels.

Besides six position holders, their parents and teachers, journalists and a few faculty members attended the ceremony.

Various faculty members also noted the `uncalled for` security measures and said that such steps resulted in needless confusion and inconvenience. “We hope that the new chief security officer will be able to check the incidence of firing and motorcycle theft on the university campuses,” one of the teachers said.Dawn.
