In early 17th century, Khushhal Khan Khattak penned these famous couplets: “Hara Chara Pukhtana Ter Mughal Kha D/Ittifaaq Wer Sakha Nishta Dair Armaan.” Roughly translated, these lines say: “Pashtuns are excellent in every sphere of life, but it is a pity that they lack unity among their ranks.”
According to scholars of Pashto literature, this is a reference to the Pashtuns’ tribal pride – Khushal Khan Khattak saw Pashtun tribalism overextending itself and found in it the cause
