Karachi: At least 31 candidates, found using unfair means, were caught redhanded by the officials of the Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK) during their surprise visits at different examination centres on Monday.

The candidates of class IX appeared in their paper of Biology (Theory) at 225 examination centres in the morning shift. The acting chairman BSEK, Anwar Ahmed Zai, along with his staff and media personnel, visited several examination centres to observe the examination process.

During the visit to the examination centres, it was witnessed that unfair means cases remains unbeaten during the ongoing annual examinations 2011 of the Secondary School Certificate Part-I and II (Science and General Group).

It was also observed that the members of the law-enforcement agencies (LEA) were not present at most of the examination centres. The BSEK on the directives of the Sindh governor, who is the controlling authority of the examination boards in the province, asked the police and rangers high-ups to deploy forces outside the examination centres to avoid external influences.

However, the policemen rarely found at the examination centres and the rangers, who were supposed to frequently visit the examination centres, were also reluctant in this regard.

The absence of the LEA at the examination centres has spread the sense of insecurity among the officials performing their duties. The staff deployed at the examination centres particularly women were more uncertain and complaint that external influence could not be stopped without support of LEA.

It was also witnessed that candidates, at most of the examination centres, were busy in solving their paper without electricity. It was quite difficult for the students to solve their paper in the hot and humid conditions. The lack of power supply at examination centres was also observed by the BSEK officials.

According to Zai, reports of unfair mean cases were sent to the concerned section of BSEK.

The candidates involved in unfair means cases would be rusticated for a year for using cheating materials during the exams.

Meanwhile, if, cheating material captured from the candidates was used in answering the questions, then these students will be suspended for at least next two years and Board would not allow them to appear in exams during said period of time, he added. The news
