Concert at GCU
Lahore: The Government College University Lahore Nazir Ahmed Music Society (GCU-NAMS) is going to hold the "Annual Concert of Heritage 2011" on Friday evening at the Bokhari Auditorium.

According to a press release issued in this regard on Wednesday, Ravians and GCU faculty members would perform at the concert being organised after the gap of two years.

GCU-NAMS President Hassan Maqsood, a student of BSc (Hons) Economics, said that the concert would be a rich blend of Pop, Rock, Flock, Ghazal, Classical and Semi-Classical. He said that it would reflect on sub-continent's rich musical heritage featuring both traditional and more contemporary pieces.

The GCU-NAMS has decided to dedicate the concert to eminent Old Ravian poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz as the world's literati are celebrating 2011 as Faiz Ahmed Faiz year.

Hassan said that NAMS singers would also present special items to pay tribute to great philosopher-poet Allama Muhammad Iqbal, Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib and King of Pop Michael Jackson. The nation

PU exam centre staff suspended
Lahore: The entire examination staff including superintendent, deputy superintendent and invigilators deputed at an examination centre set up by Punjab University (PU) for its BA/BSc Annual Examination 2011 was suspended on Wednesday over alleged massive cheating at the centre. PU Controller of Examinations Prof Dr Liaquat Ali said there were reports about non-transparent conduct of ongoing examination at examination centre set up at Cluster Centre of Board of Intermediate & Secondary Education (BISE) owing to which the action was taken.

PU students win awards
Lahore: Punjab University's Model United Nations (PUMUN) team has won six Outstanding Diplomacy Awards at the Muenster University Model United Nations (MUIMUN) 2011 at Muenster, Germany and Finnish Model United Nations (FinMUN) 2011 at Helsinki, Finland.

A press release said a 9-member student delegation from PU took part in MUIMUN 2011 in which over 200 delegates from the world participated and students won the Outstanding Diplomacy Awards. The winning students include Mohammad Umer Riaz and Zeeshan Nadeem of Law College, Saad Arsalan Iqbal of College of Art & Design, Uneza Hamid of ICS and Muhammad Saqib of ICET.

As many as four students were selected as judges by Munster University, Germany. The students not only served as members of the secretariat in Munster University Model United Nations Conference 2011 but also adjudicated sessions in various committees. The students included Muhammad Bilal Ramazan and Ameer Hamza Dogar of Law College, Sher Afghan Malik of IAS and Raza Bakir Shah of IBA.

The delegation took part in FinMUN 2011. Students from various nationalities took part in this single committee conference.

PU delegation won the award for "Best Delegation at Global Village" and the sole Outstanding Diplomacy Award was won by Uneza Hamid of ICS.

This is the first time that PUMUN delegation took part in Finnish Model United Nations. PMDC hails decision on evening classes
Karachi: The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has welcomed the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council's decision of rejecting the proposal of introducing MBBS evening classes at medical colleges in the country.

The proposal was turned down at a recently held meeting of the PMDC in Islamabad.

In a press statement, PMA-centre secretary general Dr Mirza Ali Azhar also appreciated the PMDC suggestion of closing down the Northern Institute of Medical Sciences in Abbottabad for violating rules.

"The association is very much concerned about the fast deteriorating standards of medical education and has been demanding the closure of medical colleges operating without having a fully-fledged faculty," he said. Dawn

Exhibition of thesis, research papers held at FUUAST
Karachi: An exhibition of PhD and Mphil thesis and research papers was held at the Federal Urdu University for Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST) on Wednesday. Registrar FUUAST Prof Dr Qamarul Haq performed the inauguration. The event was held under the auspices of the Centre for Research in Mathematical Studies, FUUAST. More than 25 thesis and research papers were put on display on the occasion. In his speech Dr Haq appreciated the holding of the exhibition.
