booklet entitled Hepatitis B and C, National Academy of Young Scientists

Islamabad: National Academy of Young Scientists (NAYS), an academy working for promotion of science and research in the country, will distribute a small booklet entitled Hepatitis B and C, Aahm Malomaat in the schools and colleges of all provinces.

Pakistan is among the countries with high prevalence of hepatitis B and C. According to an estimate, 7.4% Pakistani population is suffering with either hepatitis B or C. Due to the lack of awareness about the disease, the number of infected people is increasing each year. When contacted, NAYS President Aftab Ahmed said initially 3,000 copies of the booklet are published and this is part of NAYS community education and awareness program. NAYS is also working on other similar projects, he added.

Giving further details he said, this booklet contains basic introduction to disease and also some most frequently asked questions by the layman and the answers to these questions. It is pertinent to mention here that despite the great progress in medical science, there is no cure for HIV so far and the best way of prevention is to avoid exposure to HIV virus. At present, Pakistan s biggest problem is HBV and HCV infection as 7.4% Pakistani population is infected with hepatitis B and C. According to UNAIDS reports, 60 million people have been infected with HIV so far that resulted in 25 million deaths. Almost, 33.4 million people are living with HIV around the world.

The maximum numbers of HIV infected people are living in South Africa, Nigeria and India respectively. The news Booklet regarding hepatitis
