Media role in developing science culture sought
ISLAMABAD May 26 Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) Chairman Dr Manzoor H Soomro sought the role of electronic and print media in highlighting the issues regarding science, technology and developments in order to develop a science culture which was vital to socio-economic development of the country.

Dr Manzoor H. Soomro called for media`s help while addressing the two-day Science-Media Forum, `Where Science and Media Meet` which was organised by the PSF at its auditorium on Thursday.

Media persons from across the country are participating in the forum to discuss ways and means to create mass awareness about the importance of science and technology.

Highlighting PSF functions and achievements, Dr Soomro said that the PSF had not been getting media support to highlight scientific activities in the country despite its efforts to achieve objectives to promote science and technology.

Dr Soomro cited the examples of Pakistan Museum of Natural History and Pakistan Scientific and Technological Information Centre (PASTIC), two important subsidiary organisations of the PSF, which were playing their due role in disseminating scientific information.

The chairman said that the PSF funded different S&T projects of R&D organisations and universities and adopted a transparent process of funding after thorough scrutiny regarding their socio-economic impacts.

He said the PSF also awarded prizes to people who made different scientific inventions to encourage research and development activities in the country.

He also highlighted PSF`s collaboration with French Embassy regarding a project that aimed at inquiry-based learning of science at primary standard level. “PSF science centers, PASTIC centers and nine science caravans are disseminating scientific knowledge among the masses, especially the students,” he told the participants.

Keynote Speaker Adviser Science, COMSTECH, Dr Anwar Nasim said that the contributions of the non-governmental individuals was imperative for a change in the society and for the prosperity and development of the country.

“Media persons should shoulder their responsibilities to make people aware about the importance of scientific knowledge and help develop a knowledge-based society,” he said adding that there was a need to create awareness about importance of science at grass root level.Dawn
