Three IJT activists injured in police firing
Lahore: Three Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) activists were injured when Muhafiz Force personnel from the Old Anarkali Police Station opened fire on them on late Friday night.
The IJT activists were doing wall-chalking near the Government College University (GCU), Lahore, when policemen including Tariq, Sayyam Fayyaz, Azmatullah, Nauman, Irfan and Faqir Hussain presumed that they (activists) were robbers, as they (students) started moving in the opposite direction when asked about their identity. A police constable was also injured when the angry students started pelting stones on the police.
Later on, a large number of students came out of hostels of Govt Islamia College Civil Lines, Lahore, to protest the police highhandedness. The students remained on the Lower Mall for several hours, blocked traffic and even damaged many traffic signals.
The police alleged that they had opened fire as the students had weapons in their possession.
A police contingent, from Old Anarkali and Gawalmandi police stations, reached the spot and the protesters dispersed after successful dialogue with them.
DGK college to become university
Lahore: The Agriculture College, DG Khan, will be upgraded and given the status of agriculture university while experimental farm and academic block will be constructed on 1,000 acre of land adjacent to it.
According to a handout, this was decided at a meeting presided over by Senior Advisor to Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khan Khosa. Agriculture Secretary Nadeem Arif, Faisalabad Agriculture University vice chancellor, DG Khan commissioner and officers of Education Department were also present. Sardar Zulfiqar Khosa said barren and irrigated land was available in DG Khan, adding that by establishing the agriculture university, research would be carried out for bringing barren land under cultivation. He said besides agriculture, subjects of commerce, information technology, social sciences and science would be also offered at the new varsity. He said best faculty comprising local and foreign teachers would be posted in the agriculture university in DG Khan.
Later, he reviewed implementation on development schemes of DG Khan division. He expressed his satisfaction that work on development projects was being carried out satisfactorily. However, he directed that explanation from the officers responsible for delay in some schemes be called and disciplinary action be taken against them.
Khosa appreciated the performance of DG Khan district administration for removing encroachments from the city and said that the cooperation of traders made the campaign successful. The news
