Three PhDs awarded at GCU
Lahore: The Government College University (GCU) has awarded PhDs to three students in two different subjects. According to a press statement, Muhammad Imran Qureshi was awarded a PhD after he completed his research on the topic of "Computing the Stanley Depth" under the supervision of noted mathematician Dr Dorin Popescu while Atif Yaqub and Zahid Iqbal Hussain have been notified as PhDs in Zoology after the approval of their thesis on the topic of "Biosorptive Potential and Binding Sites of Heavy Metals on the Cell Wall of Selected Filamentous Algea" and "Some Studies on Bio-Ecology of Pheasant tailed Jacana, Hydrophasianus Chirurgus in Punjab, Pakistan" respectively. Meanwhile, Punjab University has awarded PhD degrees to two students. According to a press statement, Ghulam Murtaza Anjum, son of Abdul Ghafoor, has been awarded a PhD in Molecular Biology after approval of his research thesis "Identification of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) for Forensic DNA Analysis." Saeeda Mumtaz, daughter of Ch Mumtaz Hussain, has been awarded a PhD in Punjabi after approval of her research thesis "Punjabi Ghazal Di Rwait Te Pir Fazal Gujrati."
Inquiry ordered against education officer
Karachi: Secretary Education Naheed Shah Durrani has appointed Additional Secretary (Endowment), Education and Literacy Department, Abida Lodhi, as inquiry officer to conduct preliminary inquiry against District Officer Elementary (DOE) Farnaz Muneer and Clerk Nasir for their alleged involvement in a number of irregularity cases.
The inquiry was ordered by Minister for Education and Literacy Pir Mazharul Haq on a complaint filed by the president of a body overseeing affairs of government and nationalised schools, Chaudhry Muhammad Iqbal.
According to the education office, the services of Farnaz Muneer, an Associate Professor in BPS-19, had to be confined to teaching department, however, she is holding a non-cadre post.
The complainant alleged that the DOE (Female) and her clerk were involved in irregularities, as Farnaz has been holding the charge of different offices, including Comprehensive Government Girls Higher Secondary School in North Nazimabad Block-M and District Education Officer (Primary).
The complainant alleged that Farnaz Muneer was withdrawing salaries of ghost employees (mostly teachers) of different towns. Besides, the DOE (Female) was currently holding the charge of Drawing and Disbursing Officer (DDO) and obtaining extra-ordinary benefits from her multiple positions.
It was alleged that the teachers, who were on leave, were shown on duty by the DOE (F) who also received salaries on their behalf. It was further alleged that Farnaz Muneer was involved in illegal postings and transfers of the employees, besides misusing the funds of the School Management Committee.
Inquiry Officer Abida Lodhi said that she has written a letter to the Executive District Officer (Education) Muhammad Ibrahim Kumber for recording Farnaz's statement. When contacted, Farnaz Muneer expressed ignorance about any inquiry ordered against her. The news

Karachi: Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has underlined the need of skilled professionals in the media field to help further improve the performance of media organisations. He expressed these views during his visit of Awaaz Institute of Media Sciences (AIMS), says a statement of the institute issued here on Monday. It said that Memon applauded the academic performance of AIMS to educate the students with the latest technology for media education.
