Fire at Punjab University hostel

LAHORE:A FIRE erupted at the Punjab University (PU) hostel number two at New Campus due to short circuit on Thursday.

The fire damaged a bed and computer of a Nepali boarding student, Ajay, who is out of the country owing to summer vacation.

It is learnt that a reporter of a news channel was allegedly manhandled by PU security guards when he reached the spot to cover the fire incident.

Punjab University chapter Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) has condemned the alleged manhandling of the journalist by security guards. It also expressed concern over incident of fire, saying it was the second such incident at the hostels.

Resident Officer (RO-I) of the Punjab University, Javed Sami, said prompt response from the hostel staff helped to extinguish the fire shortly which erupted due to short circuit.

He said the room would be renovated before arrival of the student.

Meanwhile, IJT activists staged a protest demonstration in front of hostel number two and chanted slogans against the PU administration.

Earlier, Jamiat activists had also protested against the administration over increasing incidents of bike thefts at the university.The news.
