Lahore: Islami Jamiat Talba (IJT) tried holding an entrance test session for admission 2011-12 without permission from the Punjab University (PU) administration at Department of Statistics, New Campus, on Friday. The IJT, however, later claimed that they had been conducting a coaching class there.
According to sources, some expelled IJT activists gathered inside Department of Statistics and announced for the initiation of the entrance test. Several students who had applied for admission to PU were present there at the time and took the test.
The sources said that the IJT activists had called several other members from different colleges across the city to aid them.
The PU administration, when informed about the entrance test, reached the spot. PU Resident Officer (RO) Javed Sami and Syndicate member Prof Shaukat Ali immediately stopped the IJT from conducting the illegal entrance test on which the IJT activists turned violent and started protesting against them. Consequently, police had to be called in to control the law and order situation.
Sami told Daily Times that the IJT activists wanted to impress the new students by trying to show that they were extremely concerned with and committed to the educational activities. However, in reality they are always trying to disturb the peaceful educational atmosphere at PU, he added.
He said that an expelled IJT activist, Atif Gujjar, was also present on the occasion who had reportedly been involved in three different cases of terrorism.
Sami further said that police reached the spot on time to avoid any untoward incident, however, it was unable to arrest Atif Gujjar. Nevertheless, three cases have been filed against him, he informed.
PU spokesperson, in an official statement, said that the IJT was not capable of guiding students seeking admissions to the varsity, as they were only political activists. He said that the administration, taking action in time, stopped illegal activity in connection with the entrance test. The spokesman also said that the IJT activists were culprits and had been involved in car and motorcycle theft incidents previously. The organisation is playing an immoral role, he added.
