Application filed in LHC to declare strike call by YDA as illegal
LAHORE: Journalist Manzoor Qadir filed an application in the Lahore High Court requesting to declare the call for strike given by the Young Doctors’ Association (YDA) for May 11 as illegal. The applicant, who had already filed a petition against the doctors’ strike, expressed his concern over the mishandling of this issue by the provincial government, as it had resulted in many deaths, besides causing inconvenience to the general public. In the application, Qadir’s counsel M Gull Zaman requested to declare the fresh strike call by the YDA as illegal under the Essential Services Act. He pleaded for a permanent ban on the YDA, which was allegedly involved in putting the lives of millions of patients at risk. The counsel said that the Punjab government was yet to fix the responsibility of the deaths of the unattended patients that took place during the 37-day long illegal and immoral strike by the doctors, while they had given another strike call, which would disturb healthcare services to the hapless patients in the public sector hospitals. He requested that the Punjab government should be directed to take immediate action against the YDA and ensure smooth functioning of public infirmaries.Daily times
