Musicians perform live for schoolchildren Islamabad Pakistani and Norwegian musicians enthralled schoolchildren belonging to different academic institutions of the city at a mega musical concert organised by Lok Virsa on Wednesday.

The schools which participated in the concert were Islamabad College for Girls, F-6/2, Islamabad College for Boys, G-6/3, Islamabad Model School for Boys, G-9/4, Islamabad Model School for

Girls, G-6/4, and the ACE International Academy, Rawalpindi.

Over 120 students in the age group of 5 to 10 years attended the concert along with their art and music teachers and enjoyed the thrilling performances given by the musicians. Some of them also danced and sang popular Pakistani national songs with the musicians.

The Norwegian team included Havard Lund (bass clarinet), Trygve Seim (saxophones), Asle Karstad (sound), Jai Shankar (tabla) (Norway, India), Rohini Sahajpal (sitar) (Norway, India). The Pakistani artistes were Akmal Qadri (flute player) and Chand and Suraj Khan (vocalists).

Giving the background, Lok Virsa Executive Director Khalid Javaid informed that the purpose of holding the event was to get acquainted the younger generation, particularly school students with the salient features of the rich musical traditions of Pakistan and Norway in an attractive way. “This is the second programme under music exchange with Norway that we have organised at Islamabad. In 2010, eight such concerts with large scale participation from all public and private sector educational institutions were held with great success, he added.

He acknowledged the contribution of the educational sector, in particular Federal Directorate of Education and the participating institutions for their cooperation to make this programme a great success. He also thanked the Norwegian government for helping out Lok Virsa to play its due role for the documentation, preservation and dissemination of the rich Pakistani culture in a best possible manner.

Explaining initiatives of Lok Virsa aiming to benefit youth, Khalid Javaid said “Lok Virsa’s special focus is on youth community because in our view, they have a great potential which we need to utilise for the development of the country. Under our popular slogan ‘Harnessing Culture for Education’, we have created eight children folklore societies in various parts of the country including remotest regions of Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa provinces with a view to inculcate consciousness among school children about their indigenous culture and folk heritage”.
