PHC puts AG on notice in PSC members’ tenure case Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Wednesday put on notice the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa advocate general in a writ petition filed by former chairman and nine members of the Public Service Commission (PSC).
The former PSC members have challenged the recent amendments to the relevant law for cutting down their service tenure from five to three years. When a two-member PHC bench comprising Chief Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan and Justice Mazhar Alam Miankhel started hearing the case, the petitioners’ lawyer, Abdul Lateef Yousafzai, informed the bench that under Section 27-A of CPC, notice to the advocate general is necessary to assist the court on the legal points in the case.
The bench, however, did not accept the petitioners’ plea to restrain the government from fresh appointments on the posts that fell vacant after the removal of the PSC members and chairman.
The bench observed that it would hear the complete writ petition on the next date of hearing on June 2. In a previous hearing, the bench had served notices on the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governor, provincial government and provincial assembly.
Former PSC chairman Gulzar Khan and the members have filed a joint writ petition, requesting the high court to declare the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Public Service Commission (Amendment) Act, 2011, as ultra vires of the constitution.
The counsel, in a previous hearing, had stated that the NWFP Public Service Commission was originally established under the Act XIX of 1973 in which the term of office for each member of PSC was fixed as three years and he was eligible for reappointment for such further period or periods. He stated that the said act was repealed through the NWFP PSC Ordinance, 1978. Through that ordinance, the term of office for each member was fixed as five years. The news

Students block road to protest loadshedding
University of Peshawar (UoP),Peshawar news,UOPStudents block loadshedding protest,
PESHAWAR: Students of the University of Peshawar (UoP) here Wednesday staged a protest at the campus against unscheduled power outages and blocked the main Jamrud Road for more than two hours.
The students belonging to various student organisations chanted slogans against the government and the university administration. A heavy contingent of police was also deployed to avert any untoward incident. However, contrary to their routine, the police did not resort to teargas or baton-charge to disperse the protesting students. The students stayed on the main road for two hours despite the scorching heat and blocked traffic.
UoP Registrar Dr Syed Fazle Hadi reached there and assured the students to install generators in the university within two days. After his assurance, the students dispersed peacefully. The protesting students complained that owing to the frequent loadshedding their precious time was being wasted. They said that their annual examination would be held in June but they could not prepare for it due to loadshedding. They said that if the university administration was unable to mount pressure on the government and the Wapda to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the campus, they should make alternative arrangements for the hostels and the departments so that they could study in peace. The news
