PU Syndicate election result
Lahore: The pro vice-chancellor (VC) group of teachers at the Punjab University (PU) the Teachers Front on Thursday won three out of four seats of the PU syndicate.
The anti-VC faction the Academic Group, which is also known to be comprised of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) sympathizers could secure only one seat, unlike past when a majority of its members were in the PU syndicate.
The Teachers Front s Prof Dr Shaukat Ali won the seat of Professor after defeating Academic Group s Prof Dr Haris Rasheed and Academic Forum s Prof Dr Zaid Mahmood. AG s Dr Azmat Ullah won the seat of Associate Professor by defeating TF s Dr Zia ul Hasan and Dr Ch Nazeer, an independent candidate. TF s Javed Sami won the seat of Assistant Professor by defeating AG s Dr Mumtaz Anwar Chaudhry and AF s Iftikhar Ahmad Tarar. On the seat of Lecturer, the TF s candidate Shamaila Gull defeated AG s Rana Majid and AF s Abeer Naqvi.
Over 500 PU faculty members exercised their right to vote in the election. During the polling, the member of TF and AG traded allegations of illegal voting. The members of Teachers Front expressed strong resentment when a recently retired faculty member was allowed to exercise his right to vote by the election committee.
Similarly, the Academic Group members alleged that the administration, led by the PU VC, was actively involved in campaigning for candidates of Teachers Front. They were quite critical of the selection board which met on the same day, Thursday, and appointed four associate professors as professors at the Faculty of Education. In a press statement issued here, PU VC Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran has congratulated the newly elected members of the syndicate.He expressed hope that all the groups would work for promoting research culture in the varsity and play their due role in upgrading the ranking of the varsity.

Lahore: The Punjab University (PU) Examinations Department on Thursday announced the results of different examinations. These exams include MA Philosophy, Diplomacy and Strategic Studies, International Relations, Archaeology, Space Sciences part-I supplementary examination 2010 and MPhil leading to PhD (Semester System) Session 2008-2010.
Indian team visits PU
Lahore: A nine-member delegation of Indian journalists from leading media organizations visited the Punjab University (PU) on Thursday.
The delegation comprising Raj Changapa (Tribune Chandigarh), Suhasini Haider (CNN-IBN), Rohit Gandhi (Television journalist), Prasannan Radhakrishnan (The Week), Ajit Sahi (Tehelka), Shastri Ramachandaran (Tehelka), Seema Guha (Bengal Post), Roy Agni (Ananda Bazar Patrika) and Geeta Mohan (X News TV) was also given briefing on the history, infrastructure and academic staff of the university by PU Vice-Chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran. The VC said the varsity s academic environment had produced three noble laureates, adding the university was trying to improve academic relations with the South Asian countries but visa problems were hindering the varsity faculty from dong the same. He explained that video conferencing could also be hosted among the universities of the region.
Professor Emeritus Dr Hassan Askari Rizvi told the delegation that human interaction between the two countries was limited and younger generation should be allowed to enhance bilateral relations which would help reduce misperceptions.
Later, the delegation visited the Centre for South Asian Studies (CSAS) where Dr Umbreen Javed briefed the delegation on the institute s history, regional languages being taught there and research activities. The news
GCU Registrar has dual office
Lahore: Despite the completion of service period, Sahibzada Faisal Khurshid is not only holding the office of GCU Lahore on contract but also working as Superintendent, New Hostel of the same institution. Some teachers and students while talking to Waqt News disclosed that former vice chancellor Khalid Aftab extended the contractual tenure of Faisal and sent recommendations to the HEC for his regularisation. GCU wins All Pakistan Declamation Contest
Lahore: The Government College University (GCU), Lahore, the alma mater of great poet and philosopher Allama Muhammad Iqbal on Thursday won the All Pakistan Declamation Contest on the topic of "Allama Iqbal".
As many as 30 educational institutions from all over the country took part in the declamation held at the Allama Iqbal Medical College in connection with the 73rd death anniversary of the Poet of the East.

Students flay Edu Dept for delay in providing textbooks
Nanka Sahib: Students have criticised the Education Department for delay in provision of free textbooks to them.
Talking to newsmen here on Thursday, students of Class 9 and 10 said that they had still not been provided books of Physics Chemistry and Algebra. They alleged that the Education Department was wasting their precious time by not providing the books to them.
