HIV in Pakistan prevalence on the rise among high-risk groups

The prevalence of HIV in Pakistan has, since 2008, increased from 20.8% to 36.7% among Injecting Drug Users (IDUs), from 6.4% to 7.3% among ‘hijra’ sex workers, from among 0.9% to 3.1% among male sex workers, and from 0.2% to 0.8% among female sex workers, according to national HIV surveillance results disseminated here on Monday. As such, an alarming increase is evident in HIV rates among key populations at higher risk of infection.
