Primary schools banding to go ahead

EDUCATION MINISTER Leighton Andrews yesterday said plans to cluster Welsh primary schools into “bands” would go ahead despite concerns over the policy’s validity.

The banding system’s introduction to monitor performance and accountability was among actions unveiled by the Welsh Government last year.

But critics are strongly opposed and fear the categorisation could lead to the return of “league tables”, abolished in 2001 under pressure from the sector.
