COLUMN: Crystal sugar and refined sugar: translation and its warts The Book Club.
When I arrived in Karachi in early December 2010, the International Urdu Conference was into its second day. The next morning I attended the first session of the day on Urdu fiction. It was a novel experience. Panelists came and enlightened us with 10-minute speeches, some with 10-minute harangues. In my naiveté I was expecting cogently argued papers. I decided to leave. Outside the auditorium someone accosted and informed me that TV Channel One wanted to interview me for their programme
