Charlotte Mendelson’s Almost English made it to the Man Booker longlist for 2013 (but not the shortlist) and was called “sheer bliss,” and “a little masterpiece of characterisation and milieu” amongst other positive things by various reviewers. The assumption for someone who had only read the reviews was that the novel worked on both the plot and the story level. However, after reading Almost English, my reaction was different.
