Our sad south

This is our world, and it will not turn on us and rend us. But it’s the same sun that glitters over trenches on perfect June mornings before the obliteration of thousands in a couple of hours. Men who shave themselves in the morning, and put tissue paper over a shaving cut are blown to rags by noon. (‘Zennor in Darkness’ by Helen Dunmore)

Evil forces are at work in several places at the same time. They do not appear to have a moment’s rest as one imagines them mumbling ceaselessly
