Islamabad ‘Emerging Artists Show-2014’ opening at Rohtas Gallery on Monday showcased a unique resonance of emotional and spiritual self in a diverse display of thesis works by a group of 12 fresh art graduates of the National College of Arts, Rawalpindi Campus.
The group of fresh graduates Najam Akbar, Huma Arshad, Iqra Taher, Sidra Ali, Quratul-ain, Samra Salim, Anum Zahid, Qudsia Jabeen, Zohra Nasir, Mehvina Naeem, Zainab Hasan, and Aniqa Haider Zaidi offers a dynamic show of contemporary style and expression reflecting interconnectivity between everyday incidents and occurrence blended in the aura of transcendent spiritual tinge that touches all elements beyond our control, yet brings together all elements with their creative powers.
Connecting to each other through freedom of expression of their individual thoughts, ideas, style, and selected medium, the group of 12 explores, the creative boundaries in their quest to present the vibrant new panorama of contemporary art in Pakistan.
Anum Zahid’s unrestrained brush strokes in starkly contrasting colour palette and thick application of paint becomes a representation of her expression in act of painting. Anum’s series of work reflects a log of emotions and dialogue of the artist with self.
Huma Arshad’s work is all about the play of black with light areas in a flow of forms. With smudging, adding, and lifting off charcoal from surface, Huma employs reversal of negative and positive areas in a drawing as well as detachment and focus on a particular area. The artist received accolades while exhibiting her work at the Phillips Collection in Washington DC recently.
Iqra Tahir focuses on the process of de-construction of spaces through human figures, leading to the notion of interpreting abstract architectural spaces through the process of creative experimentation.
Mehvina Naeem explores life through her creative window as one big roller coaster ride. With splashes of poster colours and ink on paper, Mehvina expresses her creative theory in a fun way.
Najam Akbar’s blend of drawing pen, Ink, Graphite, Charcoal, and Digital painting is a unique creative effort to show his stories through the medium of art rather than words.
Aniqa Haider Zaidi explores her creativity with ‘stubborn determination’ that she says may remain indigenous to us, yet we feel it, despise it, hope to rid it, yet accept it, transform it, and bear with it. Her aesthetic narrative in acrylic on canvas touches upon diverse reality of life and living.
Zainab Hasan’s illuminating soft and subtle shade done with Ink on Transparency sheet explores the permanency of Change. She explores her creativity to touch upon all that seems alive and all that does not seem alive to portray her aesthetic theory that there is nothing that won’t change.
Samra Salim explores the internal breakage of a female body through distorted organs. Working with oil and graphite on canvas, Samra’s work highlights societal perception of childless women as a Unicorn, reflecting her aesthetics as something more to art than portraying an idea on canvas.
Qurat-ul-Ain’s ‘burqa’ clad women with symbolic moustache painted on the Hijab portrays the perception and curiosity of the hidden. Done in Gouache on digital prints, the artist explores her creativity in emblematic representation of acuity and oddity.
Zohra Nasir’s work narrates her creative tale ‘since birth till death, floating in the illusion of beauty’. Done in Gouache on Wasli, Zohra’s work depicts the distortion and deformation of human body in the ageing process.
Qudsia Jabeen explores her creative sensitivity based on the story telling of her two year old son as he interprets art and what she abstracts from his artwork. Working with Gouache on Wasli, she amalgamates the interesting experience with sensitive manner of miniature and a child’s bold and fearless scribbles.
Sidra Ali’s work done in Aquatint on paper explores the human body as an instrument, to celebrate, in releasing repressed emotions. The group show will continue at Rohtas Art Gallery till March 3.
