ISLAMABAD: A producer of a private TV channel was arrested on Saturday for using Taliban’s name to extort money, police said.
The arrest was made by Crime Investigation Agency of capital police after a businessman lodged a complaint that he was receiving threatening calls and SMS from a caller who introduced himself as the member of the militant outfit.
The businessman stated that the caller demanded Rs2million. Later he sent a similar threat through SMS.
After registration of the case the investigation was given to CIA, which with help of the caller’s number succeeded in tracing the culprit.
During preliminary interrogation, the caller was a producer by profession and attached with the private TV channel.
He further told police that he was neither a criminal nor a terrorist, but did it (extortion) to arrange money to return the investment of the people who had made in a Modarba (Islamic investment system).
He had approached the people and asked to invest in the Modarba, which later turned out to be fraud. — Staff Reporter
