First govt cancer hospital & research centre planned Chief Minister Punjab

LAHORE:?Advisor to Chief Minister Punjab on Health, Khawaja Salman Rafique has said that for the purpose of setting up the first comprehensive cancer hospital and research center in the public sector, consultations are continuing with cancer specialists and other professionals and recommendations would soon be submitted to the Chief Minister Punjab for this purpose. He was presiding over a consultative meeting regarding establishment of first cancer hospital in public sector, at Civil Secretariat here today.

Secretary Health Punjab Babar Hayat Tarar, Director General Health Punjab Dr. Zahid Pervaiz, Professor of Surgery KEMU Dr. Arshad Cheema, Professor of Oncology Dr. Shehryar, Principal Government Khawaja Safdar Medical College Sialkot Prof. Dr. Zafar Ali Chaudhary, Director Inmol Dr. Abu Bakar as well as senior officers of the Health Department were present. The medical experts participating in the meeting gave their proposals and suggestions regarding establishment of the cancer hospital. Professor Arshad Cheema gave a briefing in this regard. He said that partial facilities for cancer patients are available at present in the hospitals due to which they have to go from one hospital to other. Therefore, he said, there is a need to provide all treatment facilities to cancer patients under one roof. He said this impression is wrong that cancer treatment is very expensive. Professor Arshad Cheema said that cancer patients require surgery. Professor Shehryar stressed the importance of immediate measures to develop a workforce of cancer specialists. Director General Health Punjab, Dr. Zahid Pervaiz suggested that initially a 300-bed hospital be set up and its capacity be increased gradually. The meeting agreed that there is a dire need to set up a state-of-the-art hospital for treatment of increasing number of cancer patients especially of poor families.
The meeting appreciated announcement of establishment of a cancer hospital in Lahore by Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif and said that it reflected his people-friendly policies. Khawaja Salman Rafique said that these recommendations will soon be given a final shape and sent to Chief Minister Punjab for approval.
