Karachi The National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW) has urged the government to expedite the process of finalising rules of business for early and effective implementation of the Sindh Domestic Violence (Prevention and Protection) Act 2013.
The chairperson of the commission, Khawar Mumtaz, on Monday cited the long-awaited act as a crucial step in upholding the safety and dignity of survivors of domestic violence.
She stressed the need for similar legislation in all the provinces with a framework to ensure effective implementation of existing laws. Appreciating the Sindh government for taking the lead to pass a law on domestic violence, she emphasised the need for an effective operational grievance redressal mechanism.
The commission has the responsibility to keep a vigil to avert any oversight of the law and leading its implementation, said the NCSW chairperson. She recommended that the awareness campaign on the law initiated by the women development department of the province must be complimented with the formulation of mechanisms for monitoring in collaboration with civil society. Khawar Mumtaz said this would help effective implementation of the act and also facilitate all stakeholders in being on board in this regard.
