Thermal power not Wapda domain Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) spokesperson

LAHORE IN view of news reports and other media contents including columns, editorials and cartoons about the issues related to power sector that continue to appear in the media, the Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) spokesperson has once again clarified the situation.

The spokesperson has made it clear that subsequent to introduction of the power sector reforms and unbundling of WAPDA’s Power Wing in 2007, WAPDA’s mandate now includes only the construction of new dams and hydropower projects and operation and maintenance of the existing hydel power stations whereas rest of the matters related to power sector do not fall within the ambit of the WAPDA.

The spokesperson further said that thermal power generation in public sector was now being looked after by the power Generation Companies (GENCOs). Similarly, other matters relating to power sector such as transmission and distribution of electricity, loadshedding, line losses, recovery of electricity bills, payment to the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and other organisations are now the responsibilities of various public sector corporate entities.
