Karachi Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah has directed the officials concerned to expedite the implementation a joint project of the provincial government and Asian Development Bank (ADB) for the provision of water supply, drainage and solid waste management systems for seven selected cities in upper Sindh.
The project is called ‘Sindh cities improvement programme’ had been envisaged in 2009 and the ADB provided 400 million US dollars while the Sindh government chipped in with 100 million US dollars. The cities selected for the programme included Sukkur, both old and new cities, Khairpur, Rohri, Shikarpur, Larkana, Jacobabad, and Ghotki.
Presiding over a meeting on Wednesday night at Chief Minister’s House, Shah instructed that the project should be completed without further delay.
He said that though the project has been in the pipeline since 2009, implementation on its several stages and phases has been considerably slow for some time. At the meeting he proposed to relevant government authorities that command-and-control functions pertaining to the implementation of the project should be centralised and the deputy commissioners of each district be entrusted with the task of completing the project as soon as possible in their respective areas.
He also suggested that technical and administrative affairs of the project be handled separately with approaching the ADB for consultancy and support.
Shah also directed the officials concerned to identify proper spaces and pieces of land outside each selected city for proper disposal of municipal and solid waste.
