Facts about falling education standards in the province disturb lawmakers Sindh Assembly

KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly on Tuesday expressed its concern over continuous deterioration in education standards in the province notwithstanding the fact that the budget in this sector had been increased to Rs121 billion from Rs16 billion in 2009. The house, while discussing two identical adjournment motions on the issue, expressed its dismay over appalling facts contained in the ‘Annual Status of Education Survey, 2013’ quoted by movers of the motions Syed Sardar Ahmad of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Mehtab Akbar Rashdi of the Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F).

The report reveals that in Sindh, almost 75 per cent class-V students are unable to read class-II English sentences and do a two-digit subtraction; 71 per cent students cannot do a two-digit division; and 58 per cent are unable to read Urdu/Sindhi/Pashto language text.

“The learning indicators of students in Sindh are even lower than their counterparts in FATA,” it says.
