Karachi Teachers of two public sector universities have threatened a complete shutdown of teaching activities if the government does not revoke the controversial Sindh Universities Bill.
At a press conference held on Monday, teachers of NED University and Karachi University condemned the delay in withdrawal of the widely-criticised bill that allows the ruling provincial party to directly appoint staff and admit students.
“The bill, which will soon become a legally approved act, targets universities’ autonomy. It basically disregards all democratic bodies of universities such as the senate and academic council,” said Dr Mutahir Ahmed, president of the Karachi University Teachers’ Society (KUTS).
and if, by that time, the government fails to initiate efforts to retain universities’ autonomy, all teachers of Sindh will refuse to take classes anymore.
