interest-free microfinance NGO, internship programme

LAHOREPAKISTAN’S only interest-free microfinance NGO, Akhuwat honoured 50 interns as part of its internship programme 2013, on Tuesday, at a private university. Tokens of appreciation were presented to the interns.

Founder of Akhuwat, Dr Muhammad Amjad Saqib said he was inspired by the words of a widow with four children, who became financially independent after getting Rs10,000 loan and two sewing machines. He said poverty could only be eliminated through hard work, and not begging.

He mentioned the organisation’s work for 1,800 eunuchs providing them clothes, loans and skills to improve their status in the society. This includes hospital services and a rehabilitation programme, where they were provided free-of-cost psychological counselling to repair their damaged mental health.
