SWABI: The youth should be educated on the media’s role in making and moulding public opinion about complicated issues related to the country’s sovereignty, integrity, security, economic progress and prosperity.
This was the crux of the speeches delivered during the prize distribution ceremony of media festival at Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology here on Friday.
The festival was organised by Media Society, one of the 26 student bodies of the institute.
The panelists said the country was passing through a very complicated phase of its history, so the role of media had become very important.
They spoke about both positive and negative role of media and said no one could deny that the responsibility of media in shaping public opinion was very critical.
The panelists said television, radio, magazines and newspapers played a dominant role in making public opinion and if the role of the media was positive, it made the nation strong.
They said ‘breaking news’ had both positive and negative impact but the problem was that sensationalism was more prominent than the required maturity.
“The awareness campaign and telecasting of the news should be flawless,” said one of the speakers. Actress Nadia Hussain said it is media which bridge the gap between the government and people, converting the world into a global village as well.
“The role of youth in media is very critical because they are the true builders of the country. It is the youth who could communicate to the world a soft image of Pakistan,” she said. The actress said the youth could boost the country’s soft image.
“The media has made it quite easy for them to reach out to the world. The participation of the people from all over the country in the festival is amazing,” she said.Dr Ziaul Haq Abbas said: “I believe that in the present era, media is the fastest yet the most accessible sources of communication. It has played a great role in shaping the trends of the events.”
He said the media should work for promoting the national interest, removing doubts and confusion from the people’s mind while promoting country’s soft image.
Hamad Anwar, an TV anchor, said: “Frankly speaking, our print media, especially English newspapers, are matured. As for the electronic media, I think it is not yet born. It needs a lot of work. I hope that with the passage of time, our media will learn the mechanism of vibrant media.”
Daood Paracha, president of media society, said media played a key role in entertainment and advertisement industry but it had to improve its role about creating public awareness of national issues and challenges and their due role.
He said the youth’s role in media was very critical in changing environment in the country. “Media and youth are two strong forces and if they work together, it can bring about a major change in the country,” he said.
Nadia Hussain gave away prizes, shields and certificates to the outstanding participants.
