Of CII decision THE Council of Islamic Ideology (CII)

THE Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) has recently declared that the ban on child marriages is un-Islamic. It is also declared that the consent of the existing wife/wives was not required by the husband before contracting the second, third or the fourth marriage and the law to this effect is un-Islamic.

These pronouncements by the CII have been received with severe criticism by the media. The critics have not bothered to know on which source (s) of Islamic law the CII has based its recommendations.

The sources of Islamic jurisprudence as we all know are the Holy Quran, the Sunnah, Ijtihad/Qiyas and Ijma. I appeal to the CII to make public the basis and the detailed reasoning which have led it to make the above recommendations. Religious scholars and muftis would then be in a better position to give their own views.
