Karachi Students who graduated from the University of Karachi take pride in the fact that one of their colleagues, Ashfaq Hussain, has been hounoured by three prestigious universities of Pakistan for his literary work.
The Bahauddin Zakaria University, Multan, Government College University, Faisalabad and National University of Modern Languages, Islamabad, have awarded MPhil and postgraduate degrees to students who completed their research work on the life and accomplishments of Hussain, an award-winning poet and writer.
The Bahauddin Zakaria University awarded an MPhil degree to one of its students, Abdul Qayyum, who submitted his thesis on the subject ‘Ashfaq Hussain ka Sheri Inteqad’ (Ashfaq’s Hussain as literary critic) under the guidance of Prof Robina Tareen of the Urdu Department.
Hussain received the prestigious Pride of Performance for his literary work in 2011. He passed his master’s from the University of Karachi in 1974 with distinction. He migrated to Canada in 1980 but has been visiting Pakistan frequently.
One of the founding members of the Young Writers Forum in the early 1970s when it was established by a group of young enthusiastic writers and poets, Hussain has to his credit about a dozen books on Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Ahmed Faraz.
He also rose to eminence as a poet. A self-made person, he hailed from Korangi, a lower middle class area of Karachi, and has made his niche in Canada, the United States, India and Pakistan. He has also been the editor and publisher of a literary magazine in Urdu published in Canada.
